Tick, Tick, Tick

Lazy mornings.  I really enjoy the lazy mornings of summer.  I had them for two whole weeks (until Summer rec. started today).  During one of those lazy mornings, this is what happened:

As I rolled over in bed, I felt a presence.  I open my eyes, and there’s Becca…big ol’ blues staring right at me.  It was 8:15 – past any “respectful” waking time, I guess.  So, I pulled myself up out of bed and headed downstairs with said child.  Before making the coffee, I decided that I needed “just five more minutes” before I was ready to greet the day.  As I laid down on the couch, Becca (and Rex) crawled up next to me.  Becca was happily petting Rex.  Then Chloe, with her anti-gravity morning hair, came tromping down the stairs.  I guess there was no more “five more minutes.”  As Becca continued to pet Rex, she stopped and said, “Mom, there’s a bump on Rex’s neck.”

A bump on Rex’s neck could mean just about anything.  He’s had gum, broken pieces of suckers, liquid ‘gooey’ candy from a tube and other oddities stuck in his fur.  So, with one eye open (and the other about half open), and no caffeine in my body to speak of, I check out Rex’s neck.  There sure was something sticking up.  I thought it was his skin.  I gave it a little tug, and something about the size of an old fashioned watermelon seed was between my fingers.  I hold it up to my face, and then I see it.  The head and the legs.  (Ewww, I’m getting itchy just thinking about it now).  It was a damn tick!  Ugh!  I take it into the kitchen and try to squish it in a paper towel.  No go.  This thing was a fighter.  A big, fat, ugly, full-o-blood fighter.  I had to get tough.  I took it outside and squished the paper towel under the leg of our patio chair.

I had to make sure it was dead, right?  I didn’t want to (OK, maybe I DID want to…just a little).  Ewwwwwwwwwww!  It was like…like…blood jelly.  Completely gross.  I made my coffee and  hoped it would help the heebie jeebies go away.  Then, of course, I had to look up ticks on the internet.  Just because.  I’m going to share a picture with you.  Again, just because.

And that’s how I started off one day of summer vacation.  What followed in the next few days was a big ol’ dose of Frontline on the dog, and some crazy chemical on the lawn.  But here’s a preview for my next post:  the tick was NOT the grossest thing that has happened so far this summer.  Have you ever heard of GWAR?  I’ll fill you in next time!

Movie Outing

Posted by: Heather | Comments (0)

We took the kids to see Toy Story 3 on Monday.  It was a super cute movie.  My kids enjoyed the first two, and have been re-watching them for a couple of weeks now.  They think of Woody and Buzz as their friends.  So, it was really nice to actually sit through an entire movie with no questions of , “Is it over yet?” or, “Can I sit on your lap?”  In fact, Chloe was so involved that she didn’t announce that she REALLY had to pee until it was over.

We went to the 3D matinée, and there were only a handful of other people in the theater.  I’m not going to give away the story, but there were moments where my kids were SUPER involved.  Chloe shouted, “Look out Woody!” and Becca actually teared up at one point.

Honestly, I teared up a little under those ultra-stylish 3D glasses, myself.  There is a moment when Andy’s mom walks into his room as he’s packing up for college and just sees the emptiness.

Yeah, there were tears.  Remember, I’m a big softie.

Tony even busted me.  Rats.

So, it was a good family movie.  Go see it.  We even bought the video game for the Wii.  And the kids have dug out all the Buzz and Woody toys from a few years back.  I think they’ve acted out every scene they can remember.  So, I not only get 3D, I get a live action version.

I love it.  I’ll miss it when they stop acting things out like that.  There will come a day when they will just lock themselves in their rooms and listen to music. So I’m suckin’ it up now :-)

This Sucks Well ;)

I’ve been keeping an eye on woot.com for a few months now.  I’m a sucker for a good deal.  Anyway, today I saw my vacuum cleaner on woot.  For about eighty bucks less than what I paid for it.  I’m presenting this public service announcement to you because I love you.  If you need a vacuum and don’t have the cash for a Dyson (like me), get the Shark Navigator.  Even better?  Get it on woot today for just eighty bucks.

If you’re not familiar with how woot works, they have a big deal each day on closeouts and what not.  The deal will disappear either a) when they sell out or b) at midnight pacific time, whichever comes first.  So go now or lose your chance.

Overall, I love this vacuum.  It sucks up the dog hair well, it reaches under the living room table, it has a long hose to reach all those corners well.  My only complaint is that the canister is a little small, so you will be emptying it out pretty often.  But for the money, I think it’s a great deal.  And nobody is even paying me to say that. :-)

While I’m here, I want to say “Happy Father’s Day” to a couple of people.  First, my Dad.  He is my go-to guy for any question I might have about, well, just about anything.  Even though he lives in Florida, he’s still the first person that comes to mind when I need advice.  He’s a great dad, and always has been.  Even when I was a not-so-stellar daughter (Me?  What?  Yeah, it can happen.).  I love you, Dad!!! <3

Second (but just as importantly) is Tony.  He’s an awesome father, spends great time with the girls, and is the perfect balance of “pushover” and “strict guy.”  I’m so lucky that my kids have such a great dad (‘cuz, well, I have good taste, ya know?)  He would do anything for his kids.  He’s the kind of dad who would put on a fancy-schmancy girly hat and play tea party just because his girls wanted him to.

Man, I am one lucky chick.  HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL THE DADS OUT THERE! Have a great rest of your weekend!

Diggin’ The Swine

Posted by: Heather | Comments (3)

This post is probably going to sound like a guy wrote it.  Oh well.

The other day I was using stumbleupon.com.  (I had a few extra minutes, the tv was ‘taken’ by the girls, and I didn’t feel like working).  I came across a recipe.  An evil but seemingly delicious recipe.  Go check it out. Here it is.

Some people might think that it looks disgusting.  But that salty and sweet combination is just so damn yummy.  I spoke of this recipe at a birthday party for my nieces.  My sister-in-law’s brother has a seriously loving relationship with bacon.  He said that this was just about the best thing he had ever heard.  He also suggested that I try me some chocolate covered bacon.  I think that’s going on the bucket list.

So, I brought this recipe up at the restaurant yesterday.  Everybody was in.  But I don’t work again until Monday.  Could we make home made cinnamon rolls with the pizza dough?  I’m sure we could.  But we’re going to follow the recipe on Monday and check them out.  If they’re good enough, I’d be more than happy to put them on the menu.  Nothing like a crazy dessert to get some attention.  I’ll let you know how they are!

Buy Our Stuff!

Posted by: Heather | Comments (0)

Hey, we’re having a community garage sale tomorrow from 7:30 – 2:00.  Rain or shine (‘cuz we all have garages!).  I’m spending the day locked in my house, dealing with toys that the kids have outgrown, books (I have the whole Sookie Stackhouse series!) and other various things that we are, well, finished with.

Here’s the link to the general info:

http://classifieds.triblive.com/listing/328959/OAKDALE_Summerfield_Estates_Community_Sale_Sat_.html

Everybody in the neighborhood has the ability to accept credit cards, too!  (Thanks to an extra credit card machine from Downey’s House!)  If you’re the garage sale type (or hey, even if you’re not and you have small children), here’s the link to the Google Map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Summerfield%20Estates%20Drive,%20PA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.099308,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Summerfield%20Estates%20Dr,%20Oakdale,%20Allegheny,%20Pennsylvania%2015071&t=h&z=16

The one thing this garage sale has helped me with is cleaning.  I’ve gathered bags of garbage along the way.  I am amazed at the amount of small toys the girls have gathered.  McDonalds toys, gumball machine toys, and just crap.

OK, I have work to do!  Talk to you all soon!
